"Athletics is The Threshold of Our School."

- Fred Harrison, Athletic Consultant

1962 was the start of Highline Community College. This year offered more than just education it also offered the chance to participate in sports. That of course is if you were a man. In 1964 Highline offered Women's Tennis and that was all. It wasn't until Title Nine in 1976 that Highline offered additional sports for women. Our college's Athletic Consultant Fred Harrison not only attended Highline for an education, he -also participated in Men's Basketball and Golf. Back then, Harrison recalls, "We had a cinder track, no softball facility and the weight room was non-existent." Highline was also the last community college to get an all weather track.

After Highline Community College Harrison headed to Eastern Montana College in Billings, where he earned his BA. He then went on to receive his Masters at Seattle University. He came back to Highline in 1976 and coached Basketball for 13 years. He was also the Athletic Director and Coordinator of Health and PE. Harrison retired in 1999, but he is currently the Athletic Consultant, he works for the Vice President of Students.

Highline athletics currently offers numerous sports for Men and Women both.

Fall offers- Men and Women Soccer, Women's Volleyball and Men and Women Cross-Country

Winter- Men and Women Basketball, and Wrestling

Spring- Women's Fast-pitch, Men and Women Track and Field

Margo Buchan

Margo Buchan is one of the most important people that works here at Highline Community College. Margo has been working here at Highline for 18 years. In her 18 years she has taught Biology 100, College 100 and a wide variety of other classes. She has been Highline Community Colleges' Athletic Academic Advisor for the past 10 years.

Margo lives only 6 blocks away from the College, so it is very convenient for her to be here. She enjoys helping the athletes here at Highline more than anything. Her husband taught here and Margo thought that it was a good idea, so she decided to as well. During a typical day Margo will teach her classes and then go back to her office. Sometimes the wait to see Margo is more than an hour long. All athletes which attend Highline have to go see Margo before they register. She schedules their classes and makes sure that they are taking the appropriate classes they need in order to graduate. Her main priority here at Highline is to make Sure that all athletes that attend HCC graduate.

Margo absolutely loves working with student athletes. She says they have so much energy and they are so exciting, and that is why she loves to work with them. While Margo has been here at Highline, she is most proud of her wrestlers. They have won two National Academic Championships and that is what she is most proud of while she has been working here at HCC.

Margo's future plans are simple. She wants to retire sometime in the near future. She wants to continue teaching for at least 1 more year, and she also wants to be the athletic academic advisor for another 2 years. Without Margo being here, academics would not be such an important part of the athlete's lives that attend HCC. Just knowing Margo Buchan has made a great lasting impression of being here at Highline Community College.
