Pacific Northwest HistoryOne of the key pleasures of studying history is using primary source material—documents created at the time of the events. We are fortunate this year to have access to more than forty years of primary sources from Highline’s Public Relations Office. Included in the collection are photos, press releases, catalogs, quarterly schedules, back issues of the Thunderword, videotapes, and more. For this assignment, students used the materials in the archival collection to write a brief (1 to 1 ½ page, typed, double-spaced) descriptive paper. Possible topics include but are certainly not limited to: 1. A significant person from HCC’s past: alumna/alumnus, president, faculty member, staff member, supporter 2. The founding of HCC. Why? Why here? How did it happen? 3. Changing course and program offerings: one we no longer have or one we have now that we did not have before 4. Changing student demographics: who are the students now? Who were they in 1961? 1971? 1981? 1991? 5. HCC’s relationship with local high schools and four-year colleges and universities: Running Start, transfer, etc. 6. HCC’s relationship with nearby communities, South King County, North Pierce County 7.HCC’s relationship with higher education institutions worldwide 8. Sports 9. The arts at HCC 10. The impact of national and international events on HCC: Vietnam, immigration, economic ups and downs, etc. 11. Construction (and reconstruction and reconstruction and . . .)
