What is
ABE/GED?
Adult Basic Education (ABE) offers
non-credit classes in GED Preparation, and Basic Job Skills both on
and off campus. All ABE/GED/ESL courses require permission to
register and are continuous enrollment unless otherwise noted. There
is a $25 tuition fee for the quarter. Tuition waivers are available

Who qualifies for ABE/GED?

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Must be 16 years of age or
older, is not enrolled in high school, has educational needs
below the level equivalent of high school completion (ages 16-18
must have a release from their school districts.)

testing?
The ABE/GED CASAS (Comprehensive
Adult Student Assessment System) test assesses student skill level
in reading and math. It is used to place students into the
appropriate level.

How do I begin ABE/GED

classes cost?

How long are ABE/GED classes?
Most classes meet for two and one
half hours twice a week for ten weeks per quarter. If necessary,
students can continue to take classes for multiple quarters.

Where are ABE/GED classes?
Morning, day and evening classes are held at
the Highline Community College main campus. There are several
off-campus evening classes at the Federal Way Center, White Center
and Thomas Jefferson High School. New off-campus locations are
created on an ongoing basis. (See some of our
off campus locations.)

What is ESL?
Non-credit ESL classes provide five
different levels of instruction to help adults who have limited
English skills. Improvement is achieved only by advancing through
all five levels.
English as a Second Language credit
classes focus on reading, writing, listening, and speaking and help
prepare students for college level classes.

Who
Qualifies for ESL?
ESL classes are offered to U.S.
citizens, immigrants, refugees and permanent residents who are at least 16 years of age.

Individuals holding temporary
visas such as International students, business travelers, or
tourists cannot attend these classes. See the
International Programs Web site for more information.

Students between 16-18 years
old, not enrolled in secondary school, must have a release
authorization from their school district.

tuition form during registration for the class. Students who are
unable to pay the tuition may ask for a waiver.

How long are ESL classes?
ESL classes usually run for eleven
weeks, two and one half hours per class session, 2-4 times per week.
Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings.

What is a credit versus non-credit
ESL class?
Credit classes focus on reading,
writing and pronunciation and help prepare students for college
level classes. Regular tuition and fees apply to all credit classes.
