Mathematics Department Scholarship Details

Amount: up to $1000 per academic year (amount may vary due to financial need).

Who is eligible: HCC Students in the Calculus sequence (Math 124, 125, 126) or in Precalculus (Math 115, 116) at the time of application, who, during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded, will take at least two of the following classes at Highline from among Math 124, 125, 126, 225, 220, or 230.

This scholarship is targeted at students who will be taking a significant portion of higher end of the Calculus sequence during the next year, so that priority will be given to students who have completed at least Math 124 by the end of Winter quarter in the year they apply.  Students who have distinguished themselves in Math 115 or 116 are also encouraged to apply.

Financial need may be a factor.

Application Deadline:  Completed applications must be turned in to the Math Department secretary, building 18, by March 14,  for the scholarship to be awarded during the next academic year.

A Completed Application must include the following:

· A copy of the applicant’s current HCC transcript (unofficial is acceptable)

· Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a faculty member in the Highline Mathematics Department.

· A detailed plan of courses the applicant will take (indicating Math courses from the Calculus sequence in particular) during the year the scholarship funds would be received by the applicant.  For example, a student might write, “Next year I intend to take general chemistry, physics, and Math 220, 225, and 230.”

· A personal statement from the applicant which details the following

1. the applicant’s personal history in higher education.

2. educational goals, including academic major (applicants do not have to be Mathematics majors).

3. Why the applicant feels deserving of the scholarship.

4. Financial need, if any.

5. Any special status, such as Running Start student, International student, etc., that could affect financial need, and any other scholarships the applicant is certain of receiving during the next academic year.

Scholarship Winners will be announced Spring Quarter for award the next academic year.
