Math 81, 91, 97
Resources Available: Textbooks(2), Student Solution
Manuals (2), Student Study Guide Manuals (2), Textbook-Linked Instructional CD’s
(2 sets of 5-6 disks), Chapter Test-Prep CD (2), Lectures on Video Tape (same
as instruction from CD’s), White Binders with Supplemental Problems, a White
Binder with a Word Problem Workbook in it. On the computers, Algebra Lecture
Series, Video Tapes on Basics of the TI 83 graphing calculator.
Resource Details:
- The Instructional CDs are a live-lecture format
with the author (?) writing on the board, going over examples. Each CD
covers about 2 chapters in the text. The lectures/examples are generally
quite good. Not interactive.
- The Chapter Test-Prep CD is a live video of
someone working the Chapter test problems from each chapter test in the
text. Not interactive, just a hand writing out solutions to the problems
selected by the user from the particular chapter test (select a chapter,
select a problem, you see the solution worked with commentary).
- Lectures on Video Tape are essentially what is
on the Instructional CD’s, just in video format, and of course not
interactive.
- The white binders contain a wealth of practice
problems for the students in printed form, one set of 15-20 for each section
in the text. (If a student wants a copy of a few pages of these, the MRC
would make them for them). There are also 6 or 7 sample tests for each
chapter, some multiple choice, for the students to look at. There are
answers in the binders (in back) for all these section problems and the
chapter exams ( except the Math 97 section problems, for some reason.)
- Word Problem Workbook (from Math 81-91). This
workbook has examples, suggestions and exercises on setting up and solving a
wide variety of word problems. Separate sections for each type, such as
percents, motion, geometry, money, geometry, perimeter, consecutive
integers, etc. Targeted at Beginning Algebra, but useful elsewhere also.
Nicely done.
- Algebra Lecture Series on the computers. No
disk needed. The students simply click on the Algebra Lecture Series icon.
They can then choose Beginning or Intermediate Algebra, and choose lessons
by topic. These are not correlated to the current texts, but are fairly
close, and a good source of Algebra review/practice.

Math 111,112
Resources Available: Textbooks(2), Student Solution
Manuals (2), Student Study Guide Manuals (2), Textbook CD (2), Instructional
DVD’s (2 sets), Video Tapes on Basics of the TI 83 graphing calculator.
Resource Details
- Textbook CD (comes with new text). We have
some the students can check out if they don’t have one. For each textbook
section, the CD has
1.
practice exercises (about 20), which the user can have explained
step-by-step to check their solution. The user can also ask to see example
problems worked before trying the practice exercise.
2.
Quizzes?
3.
There is also an extensive selection of prerequisite topics, mostly
from algebra, with the same types of practice problems (19 per topic) for
each of the prerequisite topics. This would be a very good resource for anyone
needing an algebra review.
4.
Calculator instructions for TI 83/84. Not live, just PDF pages. We have
better resources for this.
5.
XL startup instructions.
- Instructional DVD’s. Good live instructional
lectures on the DVD’s. We have two sets of 8 or 9 DVD lesson disks.
Students need to check these out from the front desk. They just need to
tell the front desk staff what sections in the text should be on the DVD.
These don’t replace going to class, but they have been pretty popular with
Math 111,112 students over the last year.
- Graphing Calculator Video Tapes. About an
hour-long video on using the TI 83 graphing calculator. (We also have one
for the TI 89). We also have a written instructional manual, and many
copies of the manuals that come with the TI 83 (which the students can have
for free).

Math 115/116. Stewart/Redlin/Watson Text.
Resources Available: Textbooks(2), Student Solution
Manuals (2), Student Study Guide Manuals (2), Textbook Skill-Builder CD (2),
Instructional DVD’s (2 sets of 6 each), Video Tapes on Trigonometry, White
Binders with practice problems and practice tests, Video Tapes on Basics of the
TI 83 graphing calculator.
Resource Details
- Skillbuilder (Textbook) CD. Note that
these CD’s generally accompany each new copy of the text, when purchased by
the student. Copies are available for checkout in the MRC.These CD’s are a
nice resource. For each topic in the text, the student can choose to use
- a short video lesson on the topic, with a few
examples worked (not a complete lesson).
- a set of skill-building exercises (about 20 per
section) with feedback on answers, and solutions worked out step by
step. Very nice.
- a section quiz, about 20 problems, also with
feedback on answers.
- There are also some online quizzes, if one wanted
to access them.
- DVD lessons. Each DVD covers a chapter
or more from the text. The student needs to check out the appropriate disk
(based on chapter desired) from the front desk. Inserting the DVD will
cause the program to start. These DVD’s cover a few selected examples from
each section in the text, in a live-lecture format. Nicely done, for what
is covered, but this isn’t really a complete lecture for any given topic. If
someone misses class, this would be a nice starting point to catch up, but
not a substitute for a complete discussion.
- The video tapes cover “Sines and Cosines”
(three volumes on trig), and there is also one on similarity and on on
Pythaegorus.
- Graphing Calculator Video Tapes. About an
hour-long video on using the TI 83 graphing calculator. (We also have one
for the TI 89). We also have a written instructional manual, and many
copies of the manuals that come with the TI 83 (which the students can have
for free).

Math 124,125, 126, 225
Resources Available: Textbooks(2), Student Solution
Manuals (2), Student Study Guide Manuals (2), Video Skillbuilder CD-ROM (2),
TEC (Tools for Enriching Calculus) Software on Computer, Video Tapes. and
Printed Practice problems (in binder) (from old text), Video Tapes on Basics of
the TI 83 graphing calculator.
Resource Details
- The CD-Rom (Video Skillbuild CD) has on it
selected examples from each section (2-3 typically) worked out live with
explanations.
- TEC Software This software (Tools for
Enriching Calculus) came on a disk with each new copy of the (5th
edition ) textbook, and is available on the web for the 6th
edition. It is loaded on the MRC computers from the 5th
edition. Students can access it just by clicking an icon on the desktop.
They should then select single or multi-variable Calc, click on the Main
Menu button, and then choose Modules (to explore the ideas of Calculus
graphically) or Homework Hints (for selelcted problems), or some of the
other options, as desired. The advantage of the modules is that it
generally uses graphing in a fairly nice way to reinforce the ideas of
calculus, and it is quite interactive—students get to make lots of choices,
answer questions, etc, and then see the results. It takes a little bit of
work to get familiar with what’s available here, and to figure out how to
use it, but the results are nice.
- Video Tapes (from 5th edition of
text). These are video versions of the examples worked on the CD rom.
- Practice Problems. There are 50-100 multiple
choice practice problems with answers for each chapter of the old text.
Still useful, even if Chapter and section numbers are different from new
text.
- Graphing Calculator Video Tapes. About an
hour-long video on using the TI 83 graphing calculator. (We also have one
for the TI 89). We also have a written instructional manual, and many
copies of the manuals that come with the TI 83 (which the students can have
for free).

Resources available: Text (3), Student Solutions
manuals(2), Instructional DVD’s (6-7 disks), Video Tape on Statistics using the
TI 83
Resource Details:
- Instructional DVDs: these provide good
exposition of the theory, not just examples worked. Coverage is roughly two
chapters per disk. Students should make sure they get the right disk for the
chapter/sections they wish to view. It is suggested that Power DVD Player be
used to view the lesson.
- Video Tape on Statistics using TI 83.
Good step by step instruction for students using the TI 83 in a stat.
