Weekly Workshops

The Math Resource Center hosts weekly workshops presented by Highline faculty and staff members. The hour-long workshops cover timely math topics.

Week 9

Thurs. at 2:45pm: Understanding Logarithms

 

This workshop is designed to help bring together some of the high points of the logarithm for students. 

Week 7

Thurs. at 2:30pm: Solving Word Problems

 

Students will finish their word problem assignment in much less time if they attend the workshop on setting up and solving word problems with Diana Lee in the MRC  

Week 6

Tues. at 1:30pm: A Review of Factoring & Solving Equations by Factoring

This workshop will be led by Aaron Warnock from the Highline Community College Mathematics Department. The material covered is useful in a wide range of Mathematics classes, from Math 91 through Calculus.

Week 5

Wed. at 10am and Thur. at 2:30pm: Overcoming Testing/Math Anxiety, How to relax and do your best and avoid the freeze-up

This workshop (offered twice) will be lead by HCC Counselor Patricia Haggerty, who has helped college students overcome Testing/Math Anxiety for a number of years at Highline Community College.  It should be of interest to all students who experience testing anxiety for any class.

Thurs. at 1:20pm: Completing the Square

Of the many ways to solve the quadratic equation , one of the most versatile is completing the square.  This tutor led workshop will be led will teach the technique which is helpful to those in Math 097 and above.  As a bonus, it may be used to derive the quadratic formula. 

Week 4

Tue. at 4pm: The Graphing Calculator for Statistics

This is an introduction to the graphing calculator specifically tailored to the needs of statistics students. 

Tue. at 2:30pm: A Review of Trigonometry

Are you looking for a refresher on trigonometry to help prepare you in calculus (or perhaps for your garden work)?If so, join Dusty Wilson for this special workshop that will help you make rational sense out of this transcendental topic.

Thurs. at 2:30pm: TI-89 Discussion Session

Did you pay $150 for a TI-89 only to find that no one would show you how to use it?  Join long-time TI-89 user and instructor Kate Skelton for a discussion on how to get the most from your calculator: simplification, solving, graphing, derivatives, integrals, 3D graphing, ... you name it.

Thurs. at 2:30pm: Introduction to Matlab

This workshop will focus on what is necessary to begin using Matlab while a student at Highline.  Topics will include: syntax, symbolic calculations, numeric calculation, graphing, and ... 

Week 3

Wed. at 2:30pm: A Math Book is more than just heavy and $$$$$ (a Writing Teacher Decodes math tasks)

“Word problems suck and I cannot understand the $110  math book—somebody HELP me!!!!”  Come hear recovering math students and one English teacher (Angi Caster) explain how to attack the reading and writing associated with mathematics.   Let us help maximize your success!!!

 Angie Caster has done coordinated studies with instructors in the Math department, and is a strong advocate of Quantitative literacy in her writing classes.  This should be a very useful workshop for all Math students.

 

Thurs. at 2:30pm: How to Factor anything that factors*

This workshop will be led by Elisabeth Briggs from the Highline Community College Mathematics Department. Elisabeth has taught the spectrum of college and pre-college level courses in which factoring is used.  She will cover a full range of factoring techniques useful in Mathematics courses from Beginning Algebra through Calculus.

Week 2

Tues. at 2:30pm and Thurs. at 1:30pm: How to Succeed in a Math Class

Is it the math gene or a matter of the right natural dietary supplements? 

This workshop will feature several full time instructors in the Math Department giving you the best advice they can come up with on how to succeed in your Math class—how to study, prepare for tests, take notes, do homework effectively, make good use of class time, use all available resources, the best flavors of Top Raman for math, and other subjects.

Wed. at 9am: The Basics of the TI 83/4 Graphing Calculator

Bring your calculator and come learn how to use the TI family of graphing calculators (TI 83/ 84)  with the excellent mathematics tutors from Highline Community College.

Week 1

Wed. at 1:20 - 2pm: Math: A Four Letter Word 

This video addresses directly the question of “Why Do I Need To Take Math” and it gives lots of good advice for people who experience Math Anxiety. The 20-minute video : 

ð       Helps students know they are not alone in their anxiety or feelings about math.

ð       Helps students take positive steps to learn and succeed.

ð       Helps educators create a supportive learning environment.

Tue. - Thur. at 1:20 - 2:20pm:  Review for Math 111 and 115

Getting up to speed for Math 111 and Math 115: Are you looking for a refresher after a hiatus from math?  Do you need a refresher on the prerequisite materials for your course? Then, please consider the following workshops led by Allan Walton from the Highline Community College Mathematics Department. We will review a number of topics of particular importance to students enrolled in Math 111 and Math 115.  

Tuesday, January 6th : Exponents, radicals, rational expressions.

Wednesday, January 7th : Solving various types of equations

Thursday, January 8th : Solving systems of equations, solving inequalities, sign analysis
